John LOCKETT, born 1835, Leek (?)
« on: Wednesday 01 March 17 16:49 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

This gentleman's profile is proving difficult to create.

The only absolute details are.........He was sentenced to transportation for 7 years on 22/07/1851 at Stafford, his co-defendants being Richard MELLOR and Daniel LOCKETT, aged 12.   Was the latter a relative?.......unknown as no information.   John LOCKETT's sentence was commuted and he was released on licence on 19/12/1854, his intended destination being Leek.   He said his father was Benjamin LOCKETT, who lived at Leek, but he too remains a mystery.

LOCKETT appears a popular Staffordshire name, adding very much to the puzzle that is John LOCKETT ???

Can anyone help please?

There is a marriage - St John, Burslem - 11 August 1832 - by Banns

Benjamin Lockett, bachelor and Lydia Turner (x), spinster, botp.

It was the only Staffordshiremarriage in the near timescale.  And I've just looked, Leek and Burslem are about 10 miles apart, so not that far - even by 1832 standards.  :o

Amended to add - Staffordshire

There's a Daniel Lockett, mmn Ashley, birth reg Newcastle under Lyme, Staffs, Sep qtr 1838.

Added: however, he may be a red herring, as there are Lockett/Ashley births in that district well into the 1840s.

BumbleB and avm228,

Some interesting details indeed but conflicting as well (John LOCKETT place of birth BRISTOL!!)   I need to try and rationalise the information and find the cohesion that will hang all the bits and pieces together that presumably will culminate in Leek between 1851 and 1854 and father Benjamin.

The joys of genealogy 8) ??? ???

Thank you.
