What is an abstract of administration?
« on: Wednesday 01 March 17 17:45 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Ancestry directed me to the Death Duty index for a relative of mine. Sadly when I followed the link it provided, the link was closed and I was redirected to the National Archives.

There I found a document entitled 'Abstract of Administration of Fletcher Salton, Mariner of Whitby, Yorkshire. Proved in the Court of York.'

Does anyone have any idea what sort of information this might contain? I have to pay to access the document and I want to know if it's worth the investment.

Thank you
;D Doing my best, but frequently wrong ;D
:-* My thanks to everyone who helps me, you are all marvellous :-*

I've looked at the Death Duty Index and it confirms that there was a will. The DD reference to the left is 110 in 1802 but there is no folio reference to the right.

I also saw a record for him in the Prerogative & Exchequer Courts Of York Probate Index which I think says that the value of the estate was less than £100.

You can use the image viewer to see a partially obscured image of the document before you buy:

Thank you for that assistance ShaunJ. I'm probably going to give it a go tonight, he is a so many times Great Uncle so it would be interesting for me to see what it contains.

If needs be you should be able to get a copy of the will from the Borthwick Institute. Not sure what the procedure is..
