1871 census
« on: Thursday 02 March 17 16:51 GMT (UK) »
On the 1871 census, my Great Great Grandad Mark Adams who was living in Chester is said to have lost his Left Hand. As he was a Tailor by profession I'm wondering if this was caused by an accident. Anyone any ideas how to find out if this would have been reported anywhere, papers etc. I've looked at 1851 and 1861 census but can't find a part for  disability.  The other thing is, he was born in Scotland, but which area? Any help very welome.  :)

Could you give more information to work on such as his Date of Birth, family members and address off the Census

As most Victorian tailors didn't tend to work with heavy machinery it would be unlikely to be a machinery injury.  However, an infected wound or crushing (leading to amputation) could well be an "accident at work" explanation.  Sadly, workplace injuries were so common that (unless they were paricularly unusual or gruesome) they would probably not be reported in the local press.

The good thing for you is that the enumerator added the information in 1871 - there is no proper space for it.  He could have lost his arm a long time ago  ;D

To give you some idea this is probably how he used to work
