Auntie Heather & Samual Ross
« on: Thursday 02 March 17 19:23 GMT (UK) »
Hi Chatters,
is it at all possible for someone to age the lass in this photo for me please? Would like to know if its my aunt.

Thanks so much in advance

I've tweaked it a little.
Estimating ages and dates is not really my thing, but my guess (for what its worth) is that they are a couple in their early to mid twenties and the photo looks to be late 50s - early 60s.

She has a quite distinctive face, with a cleft chin. As this is only apparent in about 6% of people (so I understand), if you have later or earlier photos of her this would be a clue.

I might expand that date estimate a little into the mid-1920s, because that skirt is pretty short. The cloche doesn't have a brim on it, which appeared towards the end of the decade. If she's fashionable, I'd say the photo is right around 1925-26 or so. Alas, she isn't really wearing the hat quite right, it should be quite a bit lower. Foreheads were not in style in the 20s  :)

If the dates I have are correct, she was born 1913, this should be about 1930 +/-. Had not noticed the cleft, would that still be there when she became stout?

Thanks for you help
Cheers

Well...it does rather depend on how fashionable she was, or the lady in the photo. Toward the end of the decade the cloche hat grew a larger and larger brim, for no reason except to keep on the cutting edge of style. But the big thing is the hemline. Hems went up and up until 1929, when along with the stock market they came crashing down. Hems didn't really go back up again until the late 1950s.

So on the appearance of this photo, it can't be as late as the 30s.

Cheers,

This is why I should have kept my mouth shut about dates !  ;D  Best left to those who are experts at it. To be honest, although the skirt didn't go unnoticed, I was basing my thoughts more on the chap's hair and collar, as I have a photo somewhere, taken around '61, of a family friend who looks very similar. I thought her hat was a beret, just worn in a jaunty style..... I'm digging my hole deeper here  ;D

Sorry I can't be more help with the chin, although I do know that it is hereditary but can skip generations.
