Search for Georg Behm data
« on: Saturday 04 March 17 08:43 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find more information on Georg Behm.  The only information that I have is as follows :

Firstly, he was injured during WW1 with these details: Krgsfreiw.  (Kriegsfreiwilliger) Georg Behm - Harburg a. E. (an der Elbe) - leicht verwundet (light wounded).  He was in the 2nd company of the Reserve-Infantry-Regiment No. 208.  He was wounded in the fights in the areas of Bixschoote, Dixmuiden and Verbrandesmis from October 22 to November 14, 1914.

Secondly, Gefr. (Gefreiter) Georg Behm - Ottensen, Altona - abermals u. (und) zw.
(zwar) schw. (schwer) v. (verwundet) - (it means once more wounded but
heavily wounded).  Dated 08/09/1915.

Thirdly he married Elizabeth Haberer around 1897.  She was born 11 July 1868.

Any information would really be appreciated.

Hello,

Are you sure that those three records are for the same Georg Behm?

The place recorded in the German Verlustlisten is the place of birth; Altona-Ottensen and Harburg are on opposite sides of the Elbe river.

I realise that both casualties are for men of the RIR 208, but it is possible that there were two Georg Behms in the regiment.

The obligation to serve in the German Imperial Army ceased on a man's 46th birthday, and I think it unlikely that such an older volunteer would have been accepted. So, unless the Georg Behm who married Elizabeth Haberer was significantly younger than her, he is unlikely to have served in WWI.

Did the Georg Behm you are researching definitely originate from Hamburg?

The indexes of the Personenstandsbücher (BMD Registers) have been digitalised and are available here:
http://www.hamburg.de/kulturbehoerde/digitalisate/332-5-standesaemter/4133090/start/

However, the files are split by Registry Office and year, so searching can be very time-consuming.

Hi J
Justin. I'm not too sure whether they are the same people. This is the closest I've got to Georg Behm. I'm hoping...?

Hi,

Have you downloaded this record: http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C14701935

I haven't got a clue where Palone is meant to be.

Unfortunately I cannot view the record, however I do have a copy of her death certificatate as well as birth certificate of her son. A card where she had to report to police at start of WW2 indicated her birthplace as Palone.  There is however no further details. No further data for Georg(e) Behm either.  I've gone through the German links you sent as well as some others but no luck. Palone could be Patone / Alone, etc. The Georg Behm WW1 idea could be wrong.  It was the only place where I could find his name.

Is Palone clearly legible, or is it open to interpretation?

Can you post the image here?

Palone could be Patone without the horizontal line. It was written by a police official; she was German and did he perhaps hear something else?  Therefore Palone, Patone or even Altona which is near Hamburg I believe.

Her surname, Haberer, I'm told is usually from the southern part of Germany.  Behm is usually from the Mecklenburg area.  Elizabeth was "formerly" Haberer on her son's birth certificate. Therefore previously married or maiden name?  She gave birth to her son at St Giles at Endell Street in 1903.  She was referred there from the French hospital.  Records there show she was single...? She claimed elsewhere to be married to George.

She was a cook and he a valet. I don't know whether he stayed in England. No census records show him.  He returned(?) his son in 1914 to England, from a German school. All very complicated...  Elizabeth seemed to remain in England from 1897 till her death in 1944.

You've really got your work cut out.

Altona is now part of Hamburg, forming a large suburb on the western side of the city.

This link shows you the current distribution of Haberer in the German telephone book.

Enter Behm in the search field at the top of the page and you'll get a similar map.
