The new GRO Idex Search shows Mother's Maiden Names for all births.

The entry for Ada is:
TAYLOR, ADA  THRELFALL      -
GRO Reference: 1878  M Quarter in CHORLTON  Volume 08C  Page 750

That shows a dash (or null entry) for MMN.
This almost always a sign of an illegitimate birth?

"MMN" means mother's maiden name. What sort of Metal working company did N. Threlfall run in  Colne, Lancashire?
Threlfall (Southport), Isherwood (lancs & Canada), Newbould + Topliss(Derby), Keating & Cummins (Ireland + lancs), Fisher, Strong& Casson (all Cumberland) & Downie & Bowie, Linlithgow area Scotland . Also interested in Leigh& Burrows,(Lancashire) Griffiths (Shropshire & lancs), Leaver (Lancs/Yorks) & Anderson(Cumberland and very elusive)

I may be on the wrong track but I am thinking maybe Ada was illegitimate
Birth reg FreeBMD
Mar qtr 1878 Chorlton reg district 8c 750
Purchase of this certificate would give parents details -or just mother's
Very often if a child is illegitimate the father's name is given as a middle name -but not always !
so possibly (this is not proven) Ada's father was Mr Threlfall??

then there is this census

1881 5 Boden Place Ardwick Lancs
Thomas Roberts head M 26 warehouseman  Ardwick
Elizabeth wife 24 Machinist shirts Ardwick
ADA TAYLOR daughter 3 Ardwick
Elizabeth mander Lodger U seamstress Middlesex
RG11 3894 102 13

there is this marriage FreeBMD
Dec qtr 1880 Prestwich
on same page
Elizabeth Moss taylor
Thomas Roberts
8d 472

Parish records
17 Oct 1880
Thomas Roberts 25 bachelor warehouseman 28 kendal St father John Roberts occ Tailor
Elizabeth Moss Taylor 24 spinster Machinist father Charles Taylor occ Clerk
witnesses James Lawton & Annie Hulme -all signed

so did Elizabeth Moss Taylor have an illegitimate daughter (possibly with Mr Threlfall) and then married Thomas Roberts who reared ada as his own??
