Help with the Lewis family please
« on: Sunday 05 March 17 08:18 GMT (UK) »
George Lewis born 1823 Bristol, in 1843 he married Mary Tyler who was born in 1825 Middlesex.
In 1881 they were living at 24 Little Windmill London.

Now the problems

Looking at the census they appear to have had 9 children, both parents had died before 1911 so cannot check with that census how many children they had.

John James 1844-1881
George William 1848-1852
William born 1850
Emily born 1850 (c)
Henry Thomas born 1852
Louisa Elizabeth born 1853
Florence Amelia born 1860
Alice Mary born 1867
Charles W born 1867 (c)

All born in Westminster

On checking the GRO BMD Records online The first 3 children had different mothers. John's mother called Harris, George's mother was called Johnston and William's mother was Edgley. Should mention their births were registered in different areas of London
Can find no reg for Emily or Charles.

The other children no problem mother is Tyler.  As the parents had married in 1843 and if Henry was their first child born in 1852 there's quite a time difference.
Any help/advice would be appreciated

Maybe they didn't register the births of the older children.  There was no legal requirement to do so at that time.

It looks like their son, William Robert Lewis, was baptised in 1848.  So can't be the 1850 birth.

Where have you got Charles W?  In 1871 only Alice Mary 3 is shown  :-\

Right I see him on the next census age 14 same age as Alice but I don't see a birth for him either.

Lily,

Could you give me the baptism details for William Robert please.  Only William Robert reg I can find in 1848 mother's maiden name was Smith.  Looked on ancestry and it looks like William Robert died in 1887.

Thanks for your help.

Yes Charles I can find nothing on, maybe Charles was his middle name.  Thank you Milliepede for finding Emily.

Thanks, Lily,  Any signs of baptisms for John James b 1844 and George William b 1848 think George's birth could be a different unless he was a twin with William.

St.Martin in the Fields

John James son of George & Mary Lewis - tailor of Dorset Place

Born 22nd Nov.   Bap. 25th Dec. 1844

I can also see:   Henry Thomas 1852;  Louisa Elizabeth 1853;
Florence Amelia 1860;  Alice Susan 1864 and Alice Mary 1867

I can't see George, Emily or Charles.  I'm not on a computer at the moment, so it's a bit awkward to look through all the entries incase they've been mistranscribed.

Thank you Lily,  John James has been found, baptised but not reg.  See you found Alice Susan b 1864, she could well have died.
