John French and Anne Sackville
« on: Sunday 05 March 17 19:49 GMT (UK) »
Hi! :)
I'm trying to find /confirm the parents of a Thomas French who married Lucy (Luce) Willcoke in Heathfield, Sussex on 18 Feb 1657 (as per Select marriages 1538 - 1973).

They are the parents of my 8th GGF Samuel French bapt Warbleton, Sussex, 6 Sep 1665 (Father Tho. French, Mother Lucie (as per Select Births and Christenings)

This Thomas may be the son of John French and Anne Sackville who had a son in 1627 who married an Elizabeth Woode in Chiddingly in 1654 but who may have died in 1656. I'm not sure if it is the same Thomas.

Does anyone have any info or can anyone help please?  :)

Thanks!

Hi glynnlee and Omega 1
Thanks for that, it all helps.
I haven’t looked at this for a while but from memory I found several interesting things last time I researched this.
From a pedigree of the Sackvilles (a published one) I did find an Ann, daughter of a John Sackville (of Sedlescombe) marrying a John French. This John French was an Ironmaster and as such would have been considered a good marriage prospect as in those times they were wealthy. I found this info from WIRG. This still does not mean that Thomas French is the son of this John and Ann but does indicate a marriage, and they did have a son Thomas as per WIRG. This Ann Sackville later remarried Sir somebody after the death of John French. Can’t remember details.
Sorry to be so vague! When I have time I will post again properly with my sources and dates etc.  I originally looked into this as Mandy Willard, who sadly doesn’t have her website with her research any longer, also thought these could have been Thomas’s parents.
Will try and post properly in next few days.

This Thomas may be the son of John French and Anne Sackville who had a son in 1627 who married an Elizabeth Woode in Chiddingly in 1654 but who may have died in 1656. I'm not sure if it is the same Thomas.

Wow! Thankyou rosie99 that was quick off the mark!! 😁
I wonder if this is the marriage I’m looking for?! Off top of my head the dates sound about right.
Can I ask if you have anymore info which might link a son Thomas to this couple? In my line I come up via Samuel French who’s father was Thomas but it’s just been guesswork, because of links to Chiddingly and Mandy Willards research, that had me looking at Ann Sackville and John French.
Thankyou so much, will look into this, any more info you have would be very gratefully received!! 😃

Was that the Samuel French who was baptised in Warbleton in 1665 with parents Thomas & Lucie.

I am not researching this family myself.  :)

Hi rosie99 yes that’s the info I have too. I have the marriage of Thomas and Lucie too, and a baptism of a Thomas to John and Ann French 23 March 1627 at Chiddingly, so it might be the right Thomas. Warbleton is only 5 or 6 mikes from Chiddingly so the area fits. Hard to know!
Since you posted I found the marriage record that you found of John French and Ann at Newington on an Ancestry search, so thanks again for that piece of the jigsaw!
Sorry I assumed you were researching this family too - so kind of you to help 😊
Kind regards
