Two heads in one house?
« on: Monday 06 March 17 08:29 GMT (UK) »
Hello people,

a question which I expect can be answered fairly easily, if you have the time.

Someone passed me this data for this ancestor:
[start]
1881 CENSUS: RG11/1181. folio 42. page 27.
Abode: Ivy Cottage, Read-street, Oakfield, Ryde, IW.
Mary PURNELL. Head. W. 57. Cook. St. Helens.
Ann PURNELL. Dau. 13. Scholar. Oakfield.
Mary PIERCE. Head. Mar. 28. Ryde.
Ada PIERCE. Dau. 9. Scholar. Halifax, America.
Ivy PIERCE. Dau. 7. Scholar. Devonport.
Undine PIERCE. Dau. 5. Scholar. Devonport.
[end]

..... one house, two heads!

I just had a look at the data for Mary Burden in Familysearch and see that only she and her daughter Ann are listed. Looks to me as though the other researcher has somehow combined two households into one. But rather than dispose of the Pierce family immediately I wanted to check with the experts (you) in case something weird is happening at this house. Is it a transcription error? Maybe these are two families living in one house, or as neighbours in a divided cottage?

Thanks

David C
