Newbury St Nicolas Baptisms - LEWIS
« on: Monday 06 March 17 15:13 GMT (UK) »
Could SKS please see if the baptism for Sarah LEWIS features in the PR c1803?

This may be her family unit in Toomer's Census at West Mills 31 May 1815:
LEWIS, Francis   47   born c1768
LEWIS, Sarah   48   born c1767
LEWIS, Joseph    19   born c1796
LEWIS, James   17   born c1798
LEWIS, Sarah   12   born c1803 [likely bride of Wm WESTALL 16 May 1820]
HOLLISTER, John   Carter

Sarah junr, a minor, married with consent of parents, and the groom provided a very confident signature, but there were no obvious family witnesses to the ceremony.

This is a possible marriage for the parents by Licence at Hamstead Marshall:
07 Jan 1791 Francis LEWIS   of Newbury = Sarah MIEL or MIAL of Hamstead Marshall.

I think it likely the couple suffered infant mortalities, including an earlier Sarah buried aged 13 wks in 1800, but the baptisms are the key to establishing the extent of the family.  Any assistance will be very gratefully received.

Hi dee-jay,

Baptisms at St Nicolas Church Newbury 1791-1810 for children of Francis & Sarah Lewis are as follows:

19/9/1792 Francis

26/11/1794 John

28/12/1796 Joseph (born 27/9/1796)

19/1/1798 James (born 27/12/1797)

6/12/1799 Sarah (born 21/10/1799)

22/8/1802 Stephen (born 27/12/1801)

The only other Sarah Lewis baptism between 1799-1810 that I found was this one:

11/9/1810 Sarah (born 20/8/1810) daughter of William & Ann Lewis

Bless you, Chris.

I may have to search further afield as I think this burial is likely for the Sarah born 21/10/1799 :
17 Feb 1800 Sarah LEWIS 13w Berks Newbury, St Nicolas.

'My' Sarah was consistent with her age: 'rounded down' to 35 in 1841; 47 in 1851; recorded Sarah WESTHALL [sic] aged 50 for her passage on 07 Mar 1853 on the Ellen Maria:  Liverpool/New Orleans bound for Salt Lake with almost 350 other souls.

Thank you so much.
