Walwyn's Castle - Place of Abode
« on: Monday 06 March 17 15:30 GMT (UK) »
Attached is part of a baptism record from the Walwyn's Castle register for 1822. Can anyone advise as regards the place(s) of Abode given in the fourth box? I've looked at old OS maps, but have no success. I am assuming that the first word is 'Dowlas'.

Dowlas gate appears on the 1841 census for Walwyns Castle   H0107/1449 bk28 f7 p8.  It is next toSydney Lodge on the list

If you check the same register for Jane Thomas bap 25 Nov 1833 it shows "Dowlasgate" somewhat more clearly

Gosh! That was quick folks. I wasn't even expecting to get any replies. Many thanks to all of you. I have found Sydney Lodge, adjacent to Romans Castle, on the 1868 OS map. Just east of Walwyn's Castle on the road to Tiers Cross. No sign of a 'Dowlasgate'. I presume in must have been a house located somewhere fairly adjacent?
