Ireland Foreign Birth Register- Which DOB should I use?
« on: Monday 06 March 17 21:13 GMT (UK) »
Hello. I am applying for Irish citizenship and seeking to get my name on the Irish foreign birth register. I have to show through documentation that my grandfather was born in Ireland and that I am his grandson.

I made a request to the Irish records office for my grandfather's birth certificate in December 2016.  I submitted a copy of a birth register which shows that my grandfather's date of birth was January 20, 1891.  The date on my grandfather's death certificate and other family records indicate that my grandfather's date of birth was January 20, 1891.  The actual birth certificate for my grandfather that I received from the Irish records office indicates that my grandfather's date of birth was April 12, 1892. The rest of the information contained on birth certificate I received for my grandfather matches with the information contained on birth register document that includes my grandfather's birth.

Should I use the date of birth listed on the birth register that matches up with the rest of documents and family information that I have? Or should I use the date listed on my grandfather's birth certificate that I received from the Irish records office? I want to avoid a delay in getting my name on the foreign birth register due to an inconsistency in regard to my grandfather's date of birth.

I attached a copy of the Irish birth register document that I am referring to, and my grandfather's name is Patrick Smith. I attached a photo of the birth certificate that I received from the Irish records office too.

Can you please offer a recommendation as to how I should proceed with this matter?

Thank you very much for your help.

Can you not photograph what you have??  For comparison.

It is possible that one died and another born later and same name used!!!

Hi. I guess anything is possible. But I think I would have heard about a brother of my grandfather who predeceased my grandfather. I don't have family that I could ask about this at this point in time.

Since my grandfather used the earlier date for his birth, the date in 1891, I don't think the theory that he had a brother who predeceased him would make sense. If his death certificate and family records had used the 1892 DOB, then I would think that the "brother who predeceased him" theory would make sense.

Do wrong dates get placed on records that are that old? Could the 1892 date be when my grandfather was baptized? Do you think this inconsistency is significant enough for the Irish government to relect my application for Irish citizenship? And why is it, that for me, it seems that nothing is ever easy? :-(
