Help with 1939 Register. The Meaning Of GREEN color Pen Marking?
« on: Tuesday 07 March 17 15:34 GMT (UK) »
I purchased a record from the 1939 register ages ago of my Great Nan. Her birth name was Gladys Tranter DOB 1914. Her father Thomas Tranter died in 1912 so therefore he can not be her Biological father, but for some reason was give the name Tranter anyway, Gladys mother worked in a workhouse when she was born therefore i also believe that Gladys may have been born out of wedlock.

Anyway back to my question. I need help understanding a part that is in GREEN pen. It states on the 1939 register Gladys Green, there is no mention of Tranter. It also states Squires and Craig who she both married which i know to be correct, i just dont understand where this Green is coming from? did she marry a Green? i have looked and cant find a record or have FINDMYPAST some how found out that she was actually born Green? If anyone can help me with this it would really help as i have been trying to figure this out for nearly 2 years!

Usually the additions are later marriages when the Register was updated. Gladys was obviously Squires in 1939, then it looks as if she married a Mr Craig and then Mr Green. What area was she living?

Hi,

Have you found a death record for Gladys and if so what name was she registered under?

There is a death for Gladys Craig in 1993 Birmingham DOB 1/3/1914 this could be your Gladys and perhaps Green on the 1939 Registry was a mistake. I could only find Gladys marriage to Henry Leonard Squires 1935 Coventry & the second marriage to John Black Craig 1945 Coventry. Gladys was born Tranter mother Roberts in 1914 so I would forget about FindMyPast finding she was born Green as you have mentioned.

Hi, could it not just be a manifestation of the known mistranscriptions where info has dropped down a line.  This might have happened if Green were in a different vertical column to (Craig, Squires).

I have checked if it could be the lady above, but no marriage found to a Mr Green and she died with the same name as on the Register. :-\

Gladys Squires married John B. Craig in Jun quarter of 1945, Coventry, 6d, 2019
Gladys E Craig married Stanley A Green in Jun quarter of 1972, Barking, 5a 134

Could these be the two marriages?
I have not checked.

Cheers

Whatever the reason for Green it is not a mistranscription by Findmypast, as it is in the original record, so if it is a mistake it was made by a Central Register clerk.
