Catherine Byrne
« on: Wednesday 08 March 17 11:13 GMT (UK) »
Catherine Allen nee Byrne:
This is my Great Grandmother. She was the wife of Archibald Allen (subject of another post on here by my cousin MaggieGorey).

Here is what I have evidence for:
1901 census says she was 41 gives her birth about 1860 (lived in Ballybrack, Dublin)
1911 census says she was 48 gives her birth about 1863 (lived in Ballybrack, Dublin)
Her death record says she was 61 when she died 7 Apr 1923, gives her birth about 1862 (lived in Ballybrack, Dublin)

Robert was the first born in 1876 in Glasthule, Dunlaoghaire (kingstown) Dublin.
Archibald's occupation was given as Servant

Archibald died 12 Jan 1898 and I believe he is buried in Deansgrange, but can't trace him (or Catherine) there.
Archibald was an Chelsea Pensioner, served in india in the Bengal Lancers, and was discharged in 1862.

Archibald would have been about 44 when Robert was born!
If 1863 is correct, she was about 13 when she had Robert
If 1862 is correct, she was about 14 when she had Robert
If 1860 is correct, she was about 16 when she had Robert

They had other children:
William 1879
Elizabeth 1881
Archibald 1882
Catherine 1885
Amelia 1887
Frances 1888
Benjamin 1890
Louisa 1891
Lancelot 1893 (My Grandfather)
James 1896

So....
For the life of me, I cannot find a wedding cert to give me her parent name, while I can see a couple of Catherine Byrne's being born 1860/63, how do I tell which is the right one?
There is rumour of her being born in Wicklow, but until I can identify a parent I cannot choose which of the Catherine's I have found are her.

Any suggestions?

There may not be a wedding certificate to find.  Sounds a little scandalous if she was that young having her first child with a man old enough to be her father!

Did Archibald have a previous (or current) wife already perhaps?

Ages not always precise on census forms especially 1901
In 1911 census lots of people pretended to be older than actual age.
Old age pension payments started in 1907
My guess is that she was older than age given on census forms.
Beware of other variants of Byrne surname such as Beirne

Lots of Byrnes in Wicklow.
I can understand why your cousin started researching Catherine's Husband.

Deansgrange plot H2 46 S is where Archibald is buried

Archibald would have been about 44 when Robert was born!

I have a relative who was 65 when his youngest daughter was born; His wife was 49!

Just had a look at Archibald

His army record does not mention marriage or next of kin
He was discharged in July 1871

If Robert was born in 1876 you would assume that the couple married before that date

Robert's baptism is in Glasthule
The next five children were baptised in Dublin city centre in St. Mary's Pro-cathedral
The latter children in Kingstown

The only sponsor that shows a link to BYRNE is in 1879 William's baptism sponsor was Jane BYRNE
Unfortunately it is a very common name

Have you investigated this marriage record?
