Kerry Parish register help please - Mara - McClure Aug 1859
« on: Thursday 09 March 17 19:15 GMT (UK) »
Someone very kindly put up a link to the Catholic Parish Registers and for the first time I have found my gg/grandmother in the flesh (so to speak) ;D. A very kind Priest sent me a transcript of this years ago but gave this 'one' daughter the name of Sara Francesca

However I wonder if you can help re the entry please. It looks to me like Sara and Francesca....twins??? Most of the entries above and below are one name

As a bit of interest my dear old Mum always said that her g/mothers were maternal twins, and I have never found a further baptism for Francesca. I do know for a fact that Nana and Grandad were noted as cousins when they married
Main names:
Scotland (Travellers) - Townsend/Townsley, Conway, Stewart
Lanark and Stirling - Jeffrey.
Northumberland/ Durham - Newton, Nixon, Sharp, Greaves, Naters
Warwickshire and London - Garfield.
Ireland, Co. Kerry - Marah/Meara/Mara, McClure, Howard, Melvin
Lincs - Smith, Vinter

other offshoots - Berry, Steven, Craig, Atkins, Fuller, , Stewart, Conway, Heather,

Hard to make out..

Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.

The transcriber on Irish Genealogy thinks it's twins,
Sarah McClure http://www.rootschat.com/links/01jo2/
Frances McClure http://www.rootschat.com/links/01jo1/
so they thought there was an & between the names, and given they looked through a lot of the register they must have found more than one example so I looked for another one

Bridget and Mary Lavery are also given as two different children (twins) by the transcriber on Irish Genealogy

From the context of the page, it certainly looks like twins.  Note the earlier entry on the page where both parents names are given on the same line with the same symbol between them.  Given also the family history it seems a pretty sure bet.

Having said that, it is odd how there are only two sponsors instead of four.  I've never seen only two for twins, but, regardless, it seems like twins.  Perhaps, they only brought two people along with them.

Thank you so much that's wonderful. Just wish my mum was still here so I could tell her.  Is it possible that there were only two sponsors because they were illegitimate? Or maybe a kind act by the Priest who also switched the parents surnames around so they would end up as Mara instead of under the mother's name of mcClure.

Just goes to show really it pays to look at the original entry if possible, don't rely totally on transcripts  ;D
