William Copus
« on: Friday 10 March 17 07:42 GMT (UK) »
Hello everybody.
I'm trying to find out a little more about my great grandfather William Copas  (1979-1946) Portsmouth.
I have found an army record of a W Copus 39997 dated June 1918, in a WW1 detention centre in Aldershot but I have no idea if this is him....any ideas.
Thanks in advance

Hello

Is there anything else you can tell us about him like who he married/children so we can find the right person?

Also I guess he was born 1879 not 1979!

Do these names ring any bells - Ada Maud - Horace Victor - George Arthur

This William was the son of George and Harriet Copus and died 17 Dec 1947.  Probate to George Arthur Copus and Ada Maud Shill wife of William Reginald Shill.

That could be the same Ada Maud remarried or just a coincidence with the names **

** marriage Sep 1938
Ada M Copus
William R Shill

The service documents give the next of kin for William Copus , 39997, as his  wife Kate Roffe whom he married in Islington 21 June 1914.

Blimey

Millipede, thank you for the info here. Yes, the name Horace does ring a bell...he was my grandfather. Ada was also my great grandmother although I knew nothing of a second wedding. That will now give me something to look into.
Christine, God knows how you found this info but thank you very much. This obviously shows that he was not my great grandfather so now leaves me wandering what he did during WW1.

for info.

This might be their death entry

William Reginald Shill died age 70
born 23 Jul 1914
Jun 1985 Portsmouth Hampshire Volume:   20 Page:   813

This appears to be William's birth reg.

Ada Maud SHILL died age 71
born 28 Jun 1916

This appears to be Ada's  birth reg.

Sep 1916  Portsmouth  2b   866
Ada M COPUS mmn  HOLLOWAY

There's  this marriage entry

Jun 1900 Portsea vol 2b page 951
William COPUS
female name on same page
Ada HOLLOWAY

Added

Do these names ring any bells - Ada Maud - Horace Victor - George Arthur

GRO indexes now provide mother's maiden name

Horace Victor COPUS mmn HOLLOWAY

Ada Maud Shill nee Copus born 1916 appears to be George & Horace's sister

Ah right a second marriage was wrong then, it wasn't Ada his wife remarrying in 1938 but daughter Ada who had the same first names sorry to mislead you there.

Marriage Sep 1929 Portsmouth
Horace V Copus

Copus is a good name.

One child of William and Ada has died by 1911.  Possibly a son William George Copus born in 1903 died later that year.

He had an interesting time in the Army I have to say.
Called up , deserted, tried, posted to BEF, transferred to 12/Mancs. wounded, sent back, transferred to 53rd. YS/Mancs. & discharged.
Shame he's not yours.
