He does not seem to be in any of the census forms with the bell family who were at the same address from 1841 -1901 ..Perhaps as you say he was a day pupil at the school when sampler was done ..I have my Grandmas's sampler when she was at school in 1890 with her age 14 years

Rosie,

Aged 9 yrs in 1909 he wouldn't be on 1901 too young for school.

If he was 9 in 1909, then he might have been born in either 1899 or 1900, depending on when in the year he had birthday. If he was born after the 1901 census he would not have turned 9 until 1910. and he should therefore be in the 1901 census somewhere.

I take it that all the variants of Alastair have been checked? The Gaelic equivalent of Alexander is Alasdair, and it is anglicised as Alastair, Alistair, Alister, Allister and possibly other variants I have not thought of.

Forfarian,

I was in bit of a rush so probably worded wrongly. What I meant was he wouldn't have been at that school, not necessarily that he wasn't on the census elsewhere.

Re variants of Alastair, yes covered as my search was with initials 'Al' only i.e. would cover all but I think I checked all of Scotland but I know it was all of Scotland I checked for deaths ;)

JP, I think someone else has done the 'Sampler' in his memory?

We have discovered upon reading one of the links, kindly sent, that all pupils at the Misses Bells school
wore tapestry samplers bearing their name, the date, alphabet, numericals1-10 and at the foot St Andrews Cottage. Our tapestry has the alphabet , no numerals, the year 1909, the name and at the bottom of the tapestry St Andrews Cottage.  It has in addition above the name, the bible extract 'Jesus wept' etc.  We now think it is a distinct possibility that in 1909 he attended the school but of course we have no idea how old he was at that time. Presumably his family were resident in Edinburgh at the time.

I have looked at the 1909 DC.

Not conclusive!

John Alexander MacLeod
D.O.D 5 Feb 1909

At 52 East Restalrig Terrace, Leith

Parents John MacLeod & Christina (m/s Murdie)

But....

Father's occ. Chief Constable!

I'm guessing he would be in a situation to have afforded 'Private' Schooling?

Hmmm. Now if the 1901 census (or even the 1911) showed that his parents were from the Gaeltachd, it would be a bit of evidence for him being known as Alastair or one of its variants.
