Scottish Records
« on: Saturday 11 March 17 13:05 GMT (UK) »
Does anybody else really struggle to find any scottish records on the websites like ancestry, myheritage etc?

I would love to know more about my scottish side but with already being subscribed to ancestry, findmypast and the british newspaper archives, its getting a little bit costly!

Is there a reason that they are not readily available online? having more luck finding american records than i am scottish ones!

Depends on the period you are researching. In general I would use Ancestry only for it's census transcriptions (note the word transcriptions- some of them are incredibly bad), Family Search (free) for various details (such as extracted births) and Scotland's People (pay per view) for all sorts of records (census, births, marriages, deaths, etc.).
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Scottish records tend to have far more information in them and also don't tend to sell them off to the likes of ancestry etc to show , they keep them themselves.

As "aghadowey" says Scotlands People is where to look, there is a whole list of links to websites on here for Scotland about 40% down the page with its own section titled Scotland, which might help you http://familytimeline.webs.com/apps/links/

Useful information given to you by other replies. Its really the only place you will get all Scottish Records.

The direct link is   www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Its not a subscription site like Ancestry etc you buy blocks of credits which you then use to view the record you need. You can download and print too. Easy to use and not costly. If you go to the above it will explain it all to you.

I see that you live in North East of England. What about coming up to Edinburgh for the day and searching the records in person ? The location is in the centre of the city and the last time I went it was only £15 for a whole day. Only extras are for printing any extract you need around 50p each.

P.S. They have a nice tearoom.

Hi
Just a note to say that you don't have to travel as you can view the same records at the Burns Centre in Kilmarnock and the Mitchell Library in Glasgow at the same cost of £15 plus printing.
Hope that's helpful.
