Question re: Church in York, Ontario on Bayview Avenue
« on: Saturday 11 March 17 17:14 GMT (UK) »
I am sure this is an unusual request but I found on Tremaine's 1860 map of the County of York a structure is shown and marked Ch ENC east of Bayview Avenue and North of Eglinton Avenue on the western side of Lot 2, Concession 2 east of Young Street. Can someone tell me if this is the marking of a church and if so what does ENC stand for. Thank you in advance.

Hi,

Whatever it is, it isn't there by the 1880s - see the county map here.

The property with the Ch ENG building on it in 1860 is owned by a John Burke.  The same property on this map (with the same owner) is no longer showing that building.

Looking at the 1860s map, I am seeing buildings labelled P.M Ch and W.M Ch - makes me think Primitive Methodist Church, Wesleyan Methodist Church.

I would guess that Ch ENG could be Church of England (Anglican)

I think you might be right about it being a Church of England. I read it as ENC on the map, but on a second look it appears it could be ENG. I will have to do some more research on it. Is there a year on the counties map of the 1880s that you mentioned? You are always so helpful in answering my queries and I want you to know that I am very appreciative.

I am not exactly sure about the date of this map.... the county atlases in the collection date from 1874 to 1881.

I have seen the full size versions in the library - very large books (with dates!!)  The McGill project has digitized the maps from these books.   I have been looking over McGill the site and I don't see a date for the York Map.   It would be between 1874 and 1880.

Yes....1878.

The map of York North from the digital atlas project appears to be identical to the one here (at the bottom) from the 1878 Atlas.
