Marriage Registration
« on: Sunday 12 March 17 11:15 GMT (UK) »
Soon after the end of WWII my British father went, as part of the British administration, to Dusseldorf in Germany to work in the British controlled sector. While there he met my German mother. They married in Dusseldorf on 11th September 1951. My parents were Catholic and I know that the British chaplain was meant to perform the ceremony but that he wrote in the wrong date in his diary and had gone off playing golf when he should have been performing the nuptials. In a panic my father went to the local German Catholic priest and persuaded him to conduct the ceremony. Both my parents are now deceased and despite looking through all the family paper work I can not find a marriage certificate. I know the marriage did take place as I have found many of the congratulatory cards and telegrams. Also a marriage certificate would have been required when my mother applied for British citizenship.
My question is would this marriage have been registered in Dusseldorf like any local wedding or with some section of British administration?

Thank you. I have tried Find My Past and Ancestry but to know avail. My father wasn't in the armed forces but was employed specifically to join the administration personnel in British controlled Germany.

If he didn't register the marriage with the local British Consulate, then you need to search German records.
But, there is no central repository for German BMD's?

A possibility might be the Anglo-German FHS?

There should be a Civil Marriage record? So try the Stadtarchiv.
And a Church record, Try the Kirchenarchiv.

The records might be in Dusseldorf itself, or the Nordrhein-Westfalen State archives.
