SAMUEL BORTIS of Great Yarmouth
« on: Monday 13 March 17 06:21 GMT (UK) »
Is anyone researching the BORTIS family?  I am trying to find the birth/christening of Samuel circa 1640.  He married 3 times, Rachel Holland (1665/6), Margaret Brown (1672) and Sarah Rookings (1693).  Samuel died in 1708.

John

The Samuel Bortis who married Sarah Rookings was according to the marriage a SM ie single man  :-\

There is a burial in Gt Yarmouth  7 Aug 1698 for Samuel Bortis senior.

Freereg has a burial for a Samuel Bortis 20 Jun 1708 - presumably Samuel the younger

Thanks Rosie - I missed that they were both single. That now gives me another Samuel for whom I need to locate parents!   The family had a small pool of first names - Samuel & Benjamin were the favourites!

As the Burial of Samuel B  1708 has him as the younger he is likely a Son of Samuel who died 1698 1698 (Senior)

A strong possibility Trish, but although I've trawled through the images on Family Search I haven't found the bpt of a Samuel to either of Samuel the elder's wives.  Mind you there are sufficient gaps between the children I have found for others to have been born.

The Norfolk Record Office has the wills for a John Bortis, dated 1689 of Great Yarmouth
and another John Bortis also of Great Yarmouth 1707.

They only have an admin bond for Samuel who died 1708 and its dated 1709, perhaps he didn't leave a will, but it will tell you administered his effects.

Later than you are researching however there is a will of Benjamin Bortis of Great Yarmouth 1760

Thanks for reminding me about those Wills.  I have obtained other Bortis Wills from the NRO, but not those.  I hope to get to Norwich this year, so I'll have a look at them then.
