Amelia Allen and Denis Dynan
« on: Monday 13 March 17 14:47 GMT (UK) »
This is a cracker of a story....

Amelia (my great Aunt) was the daughter of Benjamin Allen (1789 to 1846) and Elizabeth Gethings (1788-)

Can't find her birth record (she may be the Meliora Allen of 1820, but don't think so), though reckon in must be in the 1820's
I do have her Marriage record to Denis (17 Apr 1843)

Next I find, is her left behind on the docks in Liverpool (by accident), while hubby (in the 53rd foot) sails away to India with the troops.
She makes the papers, (http://search.findmypast.ie/bna/viewarticle?id=bl%2f0001317%2f18440912%2f008) and a fund is raised to look after her and a great many efforts are made to get her on another ship to join him in India.

The above link ties her to her father (Benjamin Allen) to Denis and the 53rd foot.
Other papers do a piece on her, intimating that she had a young child with her.

She finally makes it to India, actually arriving 10 days before the husbands ship

8 Feb 1845 • Calcutta, West Bengal, India
Amelia Dynan reached Calcutta in the "Mary Sommerville", ten days before her husband on "The Nith"

I don't know where to find out info on her in India, I believe she dies there, any help with this would be great.

The next bit, I am reasonably sure of having the correct Denis, but Denis goes on the become a corporal, then a sergeant in the 53rd Foot.

Then he is awarded the Victoria Cross medal for an action at Chattra, Bihar, India, 2nd October 1857.

No mention of Amelia or children???

The detail on the Denis Dynan VC medal winner is that he is from Queens county Ireland, born 1822 and was with the 53rd foot, which would all tally.

Any ideas on how to find more info on Amelia?

Erm, I think the first link is daughter Amelia's birth, which concurs with what I posted, and the second her death, albeit with slight name variation.

I assume you know the medal was purchased in 1998 and put on display?
