Bingham Family of Doolough Lodge
« on: Monday 13 March 17 15:46 GMT (UK) »
We are seeking a link between my great grandfather Arthur Shaen Bingham (born 1830 and married Maria Savage 1854 in Belmullet??) and his father William Bingham Esq , the illegitimate son of Major Denis Bingham of Bingham Castle. Love to be able to confirm dates and find partners of William and Denis to further develop our family tree whom we believe owned and lived at Doolough Lodge in Geesala.
My grandfather was Robert John Bingham born 16 Jun 1871 Belmullet and my father Robert Roland was born in Sydney in 1922. Robert John had a sister Annie Matilda (born 1875) who we believe married a William Shaw in 1906. Other siblings were Ellen (born 1863), Denis (born 1867) and William (born 1866).
We have death cert for Arthur Shaen (1915) at which time Denis his son was present. We have no information as to resting place of any members of this family link in Ireland.
We intend to plan a visit from Australia to explore my roots some of which have a marked history in Ireland. Thanking you in advance in our quest.

Greetings, and a warm welcome to Rootschat.

I don't know if you have seen the NUI Galway website, but there is an interesting page on the Bingham estate which cites several sources at least one of which has a tree:

Hope this helps
Philip

Hi Phillip
Thank you for your speedy response and input
We have checked both suggested resources
William and Arthur are mentioned ie estates for all and lineage for Maj Denis. Alas no wives named or cemetery site locations suggested.
William was we believe the illegitimate son of Maj Denis. Can't seem to find his birth, death or marriage records or mention of Arthur's birth. He does appear as having lived at Bayview House Ballina and had been present with Maj Denis at court proceedings in Dublin in about 1829ish.
Again much thanks

Hello Bob and welcome.

This might be of help if you do not have access to Find my Past - free access this week  :)
I just read a newspaper report of an assassination attempt on Arthur  :-\
As you say, a marked history.

https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/  Also has records which may be of use to you. I saw Annie Matilda's marriage I think - or her child's birth so there might be more.
Good luck
Heywood

FindMyPast Irish newspapers has mention of a court case 1843 re the Binghams and a forgery - quite complicated to read. It mentions William - a 'natural son' of Denis.

Hi forum
PS Has any member any pictures of Bingham Castle inside and outside before the 1920's fire.
Have an interest in where the contents may be displayed ie paintings etc
Thanks once again :D
