ROBERTSON / ROBINSON and SLOAN marriage and children
« on: Tuesday 14 March 17 03:06 GMT (UK) »
Hi there
Have looked in various sources to verify the following if anyone can guide me further please?

Have Andrew Robertson bn 1796 Greenlaw Mains, Crossmichael to William Robertson and Mary Sloan. Have found what seems to be William and Mary's marriage in 1775 in Lochrutton. Seems a long time between marriage ie 1775 and bap of Andrew in 1796? Not impossible. But have tried to find any other children between 1775 and 1796 between them with no luck.

Is the timeframe too impossible? Am trying to determine William and Mary's deaths but the above timeline makes me query all that I have to date
Could anyone make a suggestion please?
Thanks
Meegan

Hi Meegan

A 20yr span for births is not unusual at that time, with the larger families for many. It may be that earlier parish registers have been lost/destroyed over the years. Also, not all children may have been registered or christened.

Found this and wondered whether it could be a sibling to Andrew:

Penningham - William Robertson, ploughman, widow of Jane Cochran, age 88, d.20 Aug 1869, f-William Robertson (dcd), m-Mary Sloan (dcd); Informant: James Hannah (son-in-law).

Maybe this entry https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYMP-32T

Just with the reference, as above, to Lochrutton from the marriage you have found, two other possibly connected christenings?

George 1778 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYMP-7J4
John 1781 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYMP-749

Thank you Monica, you certainly know how to search! It looks likely that William d. Penningham was a sibling with both parents named and the others likely also. So very possible William and Mary could have been married many years, or not at all, before the birth of Andrew. Or even the son of a ? dau of William and Mary and they raised him as a son?

All interesting possibilities but feel much better now seeing there were siblings in between

Thank you for your efforts, Monica. I rarely have success on FamilySearch - need to spend more time there
Cheers

Jane Cochrane who died 20th Feb 1864 aged 91 years.
Also of her husband William Robertson who died 20th August 1869 aged 86 years.

They should be downloadable on SP giving both parents names including mother's maiden names depending on who the informants were & whether they knew those details?

Annie, I think the info above likely came from the 1869 death cert from William Robertson, possible brother for Andrew....but as always originals should be checked if not included.... ::)
