Elford family

I am a great, great grandson os Thomas H Elford, [dob May 1834/6] died 4/7/1902. Married Rosetta Barrett whom he met on board the "Beejapore" en route to Australia in 1857. Married in Dungog NSW. Place of birth, occupation in the UK, his parents names  - in short, any info.
Any interesting info re their life in Australia would also be appreciated.

Have you considered obtaining death certificates for Thomas and Rosetta?  I believe they will show parents names on them, assuming that the informant knew them.

The 1841 England & Wales Census has 6 people that would match!

More information would be required to tie in which one is yours?

I can see a passenger list which has him listed on the Beejapore as crew,

Seaman's name:  Thomas ELFORD
Station:  AB    (able seaman)
Age:  22
Of what nation:   dittoed as foreign

Other seamen are noted as British and some as foreign so maybe he was born abroad.


There are trees on Ancestry and one here which show him as son of Thomas ELFORD and Ann PATIENCE but they don't all agree on the place or the DOB so I'm not sure where their info. comes from originally.

There are deceased estate files  at NSW State Records Office http://indexes.records.nsw.gov.au/  for
   T ELFORD Hastings River, dod 4/8/1902
   R ELFORD Rawden Island, dod 26/1/1899

There are probably probate files (with more info) as well [there is a gap in the online probate index covering these years - very annoying].

The probate files *should* contain death certs, wills, details of heirs, details of property etc.

I see from the NSW BDM http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/Pages/family-history/family-history.aspx for their deaths that Thomas parents were unknown but Rosetta's parents were Samuel and Mary.  So Thomas death cert may not be very helpful.

I can photograph the deceased estate files and probate packets next time I am there.
