Huge Brick Wall, where to go?
« on: Tuesday 14 March 17 21:36 GMT (UK) »
I feel we will never know......... :(

My great great great granddad- William Otto Mority Mathis. Some records say birth Switzerland some say Germany.

He was without a doubt a stonemason. I have seen addresses in the UK from 1880- to his death. Some being 5 Bear Yard around 1888., and 2 Chatham Terrace Wandsworth London in 1891

And also a note in French where I believe he was for a very sort time and where one of his children was born. And then he is back in the UK again.

I have he birth year as 1858approx and he died 10 may 1911 of TB. I found his record attached. I have tried everything and get nothing. I have contacted the national archives, checked ships. He could of been born in one of those country's and his parents then moved to America and him back to UK when older, who knows.

I have no idea where to go. Also his name my be spelt different before the UK.  He also married a Ellen Jane Gough who was English and born in 1859 I believe in Middlesex.

He is  total mystery :-( Any help. Of how to find where he came from? Feel even the top experts could not tackle this one  ???

Which country did he marry in?  The certificate should give more information like name of his father and possible other family witnesses which might help.

The 1911 census was filled out by the householder.
So, the place of birth entered there is more likely to be accurate?

Yes that's a very good point.

There are a few family trees with him on but I can't view them to see if they have more information.

Never thought about that, with it being hand written. Yes maybe then. I have nothing on their marriage. His wife Ellen, was born in London. She was born 1859 and her father George Gough died in 6 Mar 1881 • Kings College Hospital (originally St. Clement Danes Workhouse), Portugal Street, Saint Clement Danes, And her mother died in 1876 way before. So he was 17 when her Mother died and 22 when her father passed I think. Birth of her first son William Thomas Mathis
25 Jun 1881 • The Strand, London, England. Then she's in France in 1984 when her second son is born.

Where did you see 1911 Census ? I only have the two before that. Where does the 1911 say he was born. He would of died just 4 weeks after writing that  :o

It's on the Ancestry website.  Unfortunately we're not allowed to copy information from that census :( but I can send you a message.

Unfortunately, due to copyright issues, as Milliepede said, we can't tell you what's on it.
You are supposed to pay and look for yourself?! :-\
