John Henry Gregory
« on: Saturday 18 March 17 19:49 GMT (UK) »
I'm researching my husband’s family. His grandfather was called John Henry Gregory born in either 1887 or 1891, place unknown. He died in 1922 and contact with the Gregory family was lost. His great grandfather was called John and was a blacksmith. Unfortunately, my husband’s parents are no longer alive and we have no family to help with any details. There is a vague recollection that my husband’s parents went to Norfolk to visit family on their honeymoon, which would have been early 1948 but this is unconfirmed.

John Henry married Hilda Pedley in Nottinghamshire, where they lived until his death. I have been following the Norfolk connection but I cannot definitely say that it is our family.
Thank you for any help.

Welcome to Rootschat.

As you know so little, I think you need to start with what you do know.

Where did he die, the only Nottingham death in 1922 of a John Henry Gregory is this one, which gives a birth of 1887

June 1922
Gregory    John H    35
Mansfield    7b   135

There is no John Henry born 1887 but remembering that it depends on his exact age when he died, there is a John Henry Gregory born September quarter 1886 in Wayland Norfolk. (From Freebmd)

When did John Henry and Hilda Pedley marry? I can't find a marriage for anyone with those names on FreeBMD. I have used variations and different combinations of names.
I can see a marriage for a Hilda Gregory to a  Henry Pedley registration district Southwell Nottinghamshire in Dec 1/4 1925 but that is the only instance of the two names coming together in Nottinghamshire

What was John Henry's occupation on his marriage? There is a family that fits in Norfolk in 1911 (we can't give details from that census on here)

Is there a child of John and Hilda's, who is now deceased, so we can look up their birth and hopefully establish Hilda's maiden name (given Pedley seems possibly to be a confusion with her subsequent marriage after being widowed)

If that is his death in Mansfield, could this be the marriage

Marriages Mar 1915

Hilda Dovey
John Gregory
Mansfield    7b   182

Then after his death she remarried?
