Are these photos of the same man Arthur Warren ?
« on: Sunday 19 March 17 21:43 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Not sure if this is the right place for this (please feel free to move it if not).

What do people think about these two photos being of the same person?

I will give more details once there are a few opinions.

Thanks in advance

The eyes are similar but I believe
eyebrows differ
ears differ - top man's ears stick out at top but are less so at the bottom, whilst second man's ears stick out all round

My conclusions would be different men, but given the 'hooded' eyes possibly related?

Thank you both for your thoughts.
I didn't want to post too much detail earlier, in case it influenced opinions.
Arthur Warren was my Gt-Gt-Uncle, who died on the first day of the Somme.
I have known of this for a while, but separately came across these picture, both claiming to be him.

The first (clearer) picture was posted on the Cambs Roll Of Honour site
http://www.roll-of-honour.com/Cambridgeshire/Burwell.html
The poster has mentioned him on many similar sites, so I am thinking he is a relative.

The second (with the pipe) was from a local newspaper request for information on his fate (he was posted as missing for many, many months until declared dead) taken out by his wife.
(You will need access to FindMyPast to see this)
http://search.findmypast.co.uk/bna/viewarticle?id=bl%2f0000418%2f19190411%2f025

My thought are that they are different people, but will the real Arthur Warren please stand up.

Thanks again.

Very sad.

So the second picture is definitely Arthur Warren, if it was provided by his wife?

The first picture seems to be of a younger man - although possibly experience as a soldier might have aged him  >:(

How old was Arthur when he died?

Added:  If you know the regiment Arthur was in, I wonder whether some expert on the Military Board can help identifying the uniform in the first photo?

Sorry, I see the link you posted says that Arthur was 23.

I have to say the second photo - the one which seems more likely to be him - shows a man looking much older than that.

The man in the 1st. photo isn't from the Suffolks.
He wearing mounted kit & looks to be RFA/RHA. but it's quite indistinct.
Does the article say which Regt. he was in or give a service no.?
What's the date of the article ?

Jim, the Cambs roll of honour site, which ReadyDale mentions says that the first photo is of
ARTHUR WARREN
Private 14445, 11th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment, who was killed in action on Saturday 1st July 1916.  Age 23.

I think the first picture could indeed be of a 23 year old - more doubtful about the second picture - but are you saying the first picture isn't the uniform of the Suffolks?

And a further thought - ReadyDale, you are sure that Arthur was 23 when he died?  The Cambs site says that he was (married at 19), is this the info you also have?

Sorry, should have said that the Cambs Roll of Honour site was apparently compiled and copyright Martin Edwards 2000

The man in the 1st. photo purporting to be Pte. 14445 Arthur Warren 11/Suffolks is not wearing the uniform/cap badge of that Regt.
