Thank you Sinnan, I didn't know that. However I should be able to find in the church records though. So hopefully they always lived in Westmeath.

Thanks for the help everyone. you would think with an unusual name like smollen, cosgrove and Julia it would be easier to find them.

James 1855
William 1856
James 1859
Anne 1860
Mary 1862

The first James must have died.

And more here
http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000639822#page/104/mode/1up
Julia 1864
Bridget 1866
Patrick 1868
Thomas 1870

Doesn't look like there was one between Mary 1862 and Julia 1864.

I don't quite understand the question.

Your very lucky to have an index.
With the year and month they should be easy to find in the register.

Thank you for your help and for leading me to another resource that I didn't know was available.

The question is if their marriage record is shown as the original, is there a typed record showing their parents names, or isn't that on certificates in 1854.

Hullo!

My great grandfather was John (S)Mullen(s) b 1831, one of three brothers from Clonmellon, Westmeath. Other brothers were: Thomas and Bryan.

John and Thomas migrated to Australia. A few years after they arrived they changed their name from Smullen to Mullens then Mullen. Oral history says they wanted nothing more to do with those they left behind.

We know Bryan's passage to Australia was paid for, but that he stayed behind and married. Oral history says there was a third brother (Bryan?) who went to USA.

Now Mullingar is not that far from Clonmellon or from Castlepollard/Mayne where the Fagan family who both John and Thomas married into.

The brother's mother was Mary (nee Kelly or Farrelly).

Has this just muddied the waters?

cheers,
Barb
