Marriage found in index but no scan of original record?
« on: Tuesday 21 March 17 01:36 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I've located a marriage record for my G-G-G grandparents James Wilson and Isabella Turnbull on ancestry.com that states they were married in Kelso, Roxburghshire in 1836. I've been onto Scotland's people to try to find the scanned original of this to see if I can figure out the names of Isabella's parents, but there's no record of this marriage on there at all.

I'm confused as to how it can exist in an index but there's no scanned document available on SP? Can anyone shed any light on this conundrum? Any suggestions as to where to look next?
I'm fairly certain her parents were William Turnbull and Eleanor Robson, but I can't find any documentation to support this link.

Kind regards,

Jen

Familysearch and FindMyPast also have transcribed entries for a marriage between James WILSON and Isabella TURNBULL, although I couldn't find it on Ancestry.co.uk. Scotland's People have quite a few people marrying in 1836 in Kelso, but not that one. I'm not as familiar with Scots records but I'm wondering if there was a similar system of PRs and BTs and this marriage got missed off the registers that were used for Scots People or whether the transcriber accidentally omitted it. Perhaps you could contact them and ask them to check?

Jen,

Do you have an actual date from your transcription?

Ayashi,

Is there an actual date on your IGI find?

Jen,

Is there a Ref. No. or was it on someone's tree?

Hi all,

Thank you for the quick replies!

Here's what it says on ancestry:

Name: Isabella Turnbull
Gender: Female
Marriage date: 1836
Marriage place: Kelso, Roxburgh, Scotland
Spouse: James Wilson
FHL Film Number:   1067947

Then down the bottom in the sources:

Source Information
Ancestry.com. Scotland, Select Marriages, 1561-1910 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2014.
Original data: Scotland, Marriages, 1561-1910. Salt Lake City, Utah: FamilySearch, 2013.
Description
This collection includes marriage records from Scotland. Learn more...

....but putting this into Scotland's People brings up nothing. Very confusing.

Jen

Elizabeth TAIT, 22 April 1836  same film number, so by seeking out the film at familysearch, it should be possible to find both those marriage entries, (Isabella Turnbull and Elizabeth Tait) to confirm  there's two chaps named James WILSON marrying in 1836 at Kelso.

Hmmm...so what does that mean? I'm rather new to this  - are the FHL numbers the particular microfilm / fiche the document is on? A bit strange that both Isabella and Elizabeth married a James Wilson - I wonder if there's been a transcription muddle-up in the indexing?
