Jamero Almedo MORICO, b. 1859/60 "U.S.A. (BS)"
« on: Wednesday 22 March 17 23:50 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I am trying to find the birth place of Jamero Almedo MORICO in the U.S.A..

In 1901 he was in Glasgow, Scotland.
The 1901 Census there indicates that he was:
  Born in "U.S.A. (BS)";
41 years old;  [So born ~1859/60.]
  A blacksmith by occupation.

I understand that the "BS" indicates that he was a "British Subject".
This must (?) mean that (at least one of) his parents was also a British Subject.

He married Margaret McSHANE in Glasgow, Scotland on 30-MAR-1898.
The record of that event indicates that JAM's parents were:
  Father: Jamero MORICO, Farmer
  Mother: Abagail SPELLMAN
[So, guesstimate their life parameters as b.~1830-1840, and d. >1898 ('cos not indicated as deceased at the time of JAM's marriage) .]

One (or both) of the parents might have immigrated to the U.S.A. in the 1850s (say).
[Not necessarily from the UK - perhaps from one of its dependencies?]

Can any one help to identify JAM's exact birth date (~1859/60) and birth place?
[Also the history of his parents' lives ...]

With which ethnic group are the family most likely to be associated?
[Italian, Hispanic, Mexican, ...]

Sorry, not familiar with American records.
Hoping that the estimated dates will not prove to be "too early" ...

Thanks in advance for any help,

Capt. Jock

I can't find anyone by the name of  'Jamero Morico' in the United States.  It's an odd name.  Are you sure that it has been correctly transcribed?

The Scottish census gives a transciption of Janiers Morice, but I assume that the Jamero name came from the marriage?

I also searched US for a "Jamero Morico"  and a "Janiers Morice" and have found nothing.

There is a death of a James Morico in 1912.  I have just picked up his death certificate and it shows:

Joiners Labourer married to Margaret McGuire / McShane
Father: James Morico, Boarding House Keeper, Deceased.
Mother: Elizabeth Morico nee Spellman, deceased

Have just noted a birth in 1933, possibly from either Edward Morico (married 1930) or William Anderson Morico (born 1905, married 1933) of a Alberto Jamera Morico, so it looks like Jamero is a family name - Italian?

Or possibly Spanish or Portuguese.  Almedo [= Almeda or, as it is usually spelled, Almeida?].

Jamero isn't a common Spanish surname.  I don't think I've ever heard it in South America.  I just checked my Quito phone book and no Jamero is listed.  However, there were 136 Jameros in the 2000 US census; 75% of them said they were Asian/Pacific Islander - I'm guessing Philippines.

I am out of credits on Scotlands People but I am wondering if this is the family in St Rollox in 1911:

Surname Maurice

Edward age 11
Alfred age 15
Louisa age 1
*I* age 57
"M" age 36
William age 6

The names and ages broadly correspond to Morico births in St Rollox:

Alfred Morico 1896
Edward Morico 1900
William Anderson Morico 1905
Louisa Morico 1909
