Migrant Miners working in America
« on: Thursday 23 March 17 10:10 GMT (UK) »

Whilst  searching the Cornish censuses for my ancestors, I sometimes come across the words..... Supported By Husband In America.

This has made me wonder, how this worked, as they didn't have online banking, as we do today.  Also, many families lived in small villages, miles from main towns.

Could have been through Western Union  ???

1871 - Western Union's famous Money Transfer service first became available.

Is it possible, if they went to America working for a mining company with branches (? ) in Cornwall, arrangements were made via the company for a weekly allowance to be paid to the wife ?
