Reserved Occupations WW1 and WW2 England
« on: Saturday 25 March 17 05:55 GMT (UK) »
Hello
I've just joined RootsChat.com.  My question is where would I start to search to find out if my Grandfather was listed as being in a reserved occupation for both WW1 and WW2.  He was born 1890/1.  I have searched WW1 military lists and cannot find him anywhere.  Not too sure about WW2 as he would have been late 40s when WW2 commenced.  Thank you for any advice.

Hello Ann,

Welcome to Rootschat.   :)

Are you aware that around 70% of WW1 military service records were destroyed in the bombing in WW2? Have you searched the Medals records?

If he married or had children during that time then his occupation will be shown on the certificate.

Thank you Nanny Jan.  No, I wasn't aware that those records had been destroyed.  He didn't marry until 1918.  I haven't searched Medal Records.  Thank you for the hint.

A copy of his marriage certificate might help.  They cost £9.25 from GRO, postage included.

Welcome to RootsChat
In November 1915 four lists of occupations scheduled as vitally important for war work and other essential requirements were published.
List A; Occupations required for production or transport of munitions supplied by the Ministry of Munitions.
List B; Coal Mining.
List C;
(a) Agricultural Occupations.
(b) Certain Occupations in mining etc.
(c) Railway Servants employed in the manipulation of traffic and in the maintenance of the lines and rolling stock.
List D; List of Occupations (Reserved Occupations) of cardinal importance for the maintenance of some other branches of trade and industry.
Each of these lists had a detailed description of the occupations included, which were subject to revision as the industrial situation of the country demanded. More occupations in Food and Clothing were added in Dec 1915.
If you can get access to The Times digital archive, the issue for Monday, Nov 22, 1915; pg. 9; gives a list of all the scheduled trades that were "vitally important at the present time for war work or for other essential requirements"

My question is where would I start to search to find out if my Grandfather was listed as being in a reserved occupation for both WW1 and WW2.

There are no lists of individual people in reserved occupations, so you would need to know his occupation, even then he could have enlisted in the forces.

His occupation in 1911 and 1939 might be of some help.

Or, at present, £8 for a PDF copy, emailed from GRO.
