Danish Research
« on: Sunday 26 March 17 18:28 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to help a friend with his Danish ancestry. Is there any website, other than Family Search, which would help us? FS seem to be pretty good for christenings but not on marriages.

I'm currently looking for a marriage (most likely in Copenhagen) between Johann Christian Schultz and Johanne Maria (sometimes just Marie) Larsdr or Larsen. They had a couple of children in Copenhagen 1858 Johanne Christiane and 1861 Carl Johan and then I lose track of them.

Any pointers would be gratefully received.
HELP!!!

 BATHSHEBA BOOTHROYD bn c. 1802 W. Yorks.

Baptism nowhere to be found. Possibly in a nonconformist church near ALMONDBURY or HUDDERSFIELD.

Hi

I have not yet found his marriage record to Johanne. Here are the original birth records.

I use:
https://www.danishfamilysearch.com/search/
and
https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/collection/theme/1

1858 Birth - Johanne Christiane: http://ao.sa.dk/ao/data.ashx?bid=24752481
1861 Birth - Carl Johan: http://ao.sa.dk/ao/data.ashx?bid=26479197

According to the census Johan was born in Pomerania.
1880 Copenhagen Census - Johan and second wife: http://ao.sa.dk/ao/data.ashx?bid=12104748

This is a great help, jamcat95, Thanks.

Am I right in thinking that you can read Danish? If so, would it be possible for you to translate the following:
- the parent column for the 1858 christening of  Johanne Christiane (it seems to say a lot more than that for brother Carl Johann)

- the 1880 Copenhagen census return for the Schultz family.

I did wonder if Johanne (first wife) had died when I only found the two births in 1858 and 1861 - I shall have to study the link you gave me which is in English!!

Hi
Lucky you asked. I didn't even think to read the whole record as I thought they were married. They were actually not married. I can read a little Danish if I can decipher it. I live in Sweden so understanding it is no problem.
The record just states that she was single and states who the father was. He was a labourer from Vesterbro.

I'm confused! Who did you mean when you said in your last post that they weren't married?

The 1880 census states that both Johan Schultz and Johanna Svendin (can't make out her middle name) are married. I found a Danish to English translation online which has helped a bit.

Does this mean that they were married to each other, even though she is not named Schultz? perhaps the Danish women kept their maiden names like Scottish did? As they also had 2 lodgers, perhaps she was the 'housekeeper' and married to someone else!!

Is it possible to find them on any later censuses? I'm not having much luck finding anything on the Danish Family Search site.

Sorry to be a pest!

Hi
No worries.
I noticed that it was just this record stating that they weren't married. They were recorded as married in Carl Johan 's birth. So Johanna Christine was illegitimate. Many families followed the patronymic system so the surname would follow even when married.

I am trying to locate them in earlier censuses but it is turning out to be a bit of a challenge.

The 1880 Census says Johanna nee Svendsen from Sweden.
