princess Alice orphanage in birmingham
« on: Wednesday 29 March 17 16:41 BST (UK) »
Hi am very interested in finding more information about my maternal grandfather Alfred Bertram skidmore born 1907. He was put into the orphanage at the age of 3 or 4 after his father had passed away. He went with at least another sibling possibly Lillian. Mum then remarried and took other sibling out but left my grandfather there. Not sure where to start my search. Any help would be appreciated thanks xx

Hi,
It appears that records of Princess Alice Orphanage, Sutton Coldfield, Warwickshire are held in the archives in Birmingham. The catalogue entry shows they have a significant amount of material, including Registers of Children. Is this the institution you mean ? It would probably be best to contact them to check what records are available to view.

If you send an email to Birminham Archives, you can check what they have and if necessary book an appointment to see the original registers. Good luck !

Hi, I know this doesn't answer your question but I grew up down the road from the orphanage in the 70's until the site was sold and most of the buildings destroyed so a Tesco could be built there instead.

Hi,

If I am looking at the right parents Alfred Bertram's father also Alfred Bertram is living in Aston in 1901 without Emily Nee TAYLOR. Emily is with her parents John and Elizabeth TAYLOR in Hunslet, Yorkshire.

Unfortunately we are not able to transcribe info from the 1911 census here, but from using the free index I can see Alfred Bertram SKIDMORE b.1908 living in Hunslet, his grandparents are also still living there. So it looks like they or Emily took him out of the orphanage before 1911.

Living with Emily in 1911 you may find,

Arthur SKIDMORE    Dec Q 1902    Hunslet    9b  250
mmn. TAYLOR

Florrie SKIDMORE    Dec Q 1909    Aston    6d  222
mmn. TAYLOR

I also think these could also be Alfred Snr. and Emily's children,

Doris SKIDMORE    Jun Q 1901    Hunslet    9b  268
mmn. TAYLOR

Lilian May SKIDMORE    Mar Q 1905    Solihull    6d  639
mmn. TAYLOR

This could show that Emily was living/staying with her family in Hunslet. for the births of her first two children.

If you look up Doris and Lilian in 1911 they are in Bristol.

Looking up info. about Muller's Orphan Houses, Ashley Down, Bristol might help :)
