Where is this scene by LS Lowry
« on: Friday 31 March 17 15:37 BST (UK) »
I have this print by LS Lowry.  It is entitled 'A Country Road'  When I googled it for more information, it just says 'a road near Lytham'.  Can anyone give me a more precise location.  I'd love to go and have a look what the road looks like now.  The picture was painted in 1952

Many thanks  Chris

Google images didn't yield anything  :-\...is that a windmill in the distance on the right?..that could give you a lead.

There is a windmill in Lytham, but it it very close to the sea - actual position is on Lytham Green.

Yes, it's definitely a windmill on the picture.  It looks to be about a mile away, so the house is set back from the coast.  I've had a look on Google Earth but can find anything obvious

Lowry has another painting called Regent Street, Lytham ( The Farm) it looks very similar and with the same fencing.

It is very similar, but not identical. Question is, how much artistic licence is there?

Other windmills near Lytham include Little Marton and Staining, but I don't know enough about the area to say if it's either of those.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

I agree...it may be his own interpretation of the area...it could now be a campsite or a housing development.

Apparently Regent Street is now Regent Avenue. If it was in that area it's been pretty comprehensively built over  :-\

I'm no expert but I think I heard in a TV programme on him that many of Lowry's works were composite pictures so although individual elements can be identified, you can't always pin them down to a precise location.

I love Lowry's quirky style & have a book on him somewhere but have never seen this one before - it's lovely. If it's a real place I'd love to know where it is too.
