Four Missing Brothers, Norwich
« on: Sunday 02 April 17 10:52 BST (UK) »
I have 'lost' four brothers and sons of John Scotter and Sarah (nee Nickalls/Nichols); all born Norwich and need some inspiration  ;D

William Rolland (could be Holland) Scotter, baptised 11 September 1814 St Margaret, Norwich.  He disappears after his christening.

John Scotter, born 1817, a shoemaker.  He married Harriet Layton in 1844 in Lambeth, London.  I have got them in 1851, but in 1857 Harriet dies as far as I can work out childless.  After that John disappears.  He does have a criminal record of 12 months for housebreaking in 1834 but I can't find any other obvious offences.  He may have drowned in 1857/58 as there is a newspaper report in March 1858 in the Norwich News of a body being found in the river at Thorpe that was identified as John Scotter, Shoemaker, but I have no age for him

George Scotter, born 1819.  He married Maria Cocks in 1848 in Norwich and after the 1851 they too disappear.  He is not the George Christopher Scotter who also lives in Norwich.

Frederick Scotter, born 1825.  He married Mary Ann Russell.  There are 2 marriages recorded for them on 24 February 1849 and 24 March 1850 and a daughter Margaret appears on the 1851 with them, born around 1849 in Great Yarmouth.  I cannot find Margaret's birth registration either as a Scotter or a Russell and after 1851 they too go.

There are 2 other siblings Robert and Sarah that are completely accounted for.

Thank you
Ruth

One to consider ...

Baptism at St Mary Whitechapel, Middlesex
14 June 1857
Elizabeth Rebecca, parents George and Maria Scotter, Little Alie Street, Painter and Glazier
born 12 March 1855

GRO births index gives mmn Cocks
