James Kelly
« on: Tuesday 04 April 17 04:44 BST (UK) »
Hi,

This is my first time on here, and I'm hoping somebody can help me, as I have hit a brick wall with my research.
I am trying to find information on James Kelly (my Great Grandfather).
They are from the Fulham, London area, and lived at 82 Bayonne Road.

All I have to go on is his son Edward James Kelly's wedding certificate that says his father is James Kelly, and that he was a Labourer.

I also have a copy of the 1939 register, saying James was born 12th June 1894
I have let my Ancestry membership lapse, as I was getting frustrated from getting nowhere fast.

I ordered 2 birth certificates for Edward Kelly, but neither of them were the correct ones, so I am stumped as to how to find James.
I have
Vol 01D, 1894, Qtr D at St Olave
Vol 01C, 1894, Qtr M, Poplar

I am not 100% sure that he was born in England, could be Ireland.

Any help would be much appreciated.
Alexandra

Hi  Kelly Gang,
You say your looking for info on James Kelly 12th June 1894 but you say you have birth certs for Edward Kelly 1894, surely if Edward was James's son he will have been born after that date. In the 1939 there is Edward J Kelly 1915 in Fulham.

In the 1901 census there's Edward Kelly, son born 1894, Bermondsey. James Kelly, father born 1866 Ireland. Mother is Mary.

Thanks.

I did find the 1901 census when I was a member of Ancestry.
That was why I ordered the St Olave birth certificate for Edward, as it was the closest to Bermondsey.

The birthdate of that certificate is 5th August 1894, but according to the 1939 register, his birthdate is 12th June 1894. It has his name as Edward and no middle name, but I know he had the middle name of James.

Plus, although it states father as James Patrick Kelly, it says his occupation is Vestry labourer, not a dustman.

It does have Mother as Mary Ann (Collins) though.

How can I find out for sure if it is the correct birth certificate ?

I'm not the best with this research business.

They're in the 1911 as well but that has Edwards birth as 1895, proberly the same as James is a dustman.

Kelly    Edward James    Poplar 1c   677
Kelly    Edward         St. Geo. East    1c   388
Kelly    Edward Patrick    Mile End    1c   549

What other info is there on the marriage cert that may help, date etc.

For what it's worth, at this stage, I don't think your Edward James Kelly is the son of James Kelly, dustman in 1901 and 1911 (who appears to be the James Patrick Kelly married to Mary Collins).

It was only 6 years later that your Edward married, and pretty sure he'd have said his fathers occupation was 'Dustman' and not Labourer.   Plus you say you have that Edward's birth certificate and it wasn't a birth date of 12/6/1894!    Sometimes people got their birth year wrong but not their actual birthday.

Can you tell us everything that's on his marriage certificate?
