Help with a family mystery!
« on: Tuesday 04 April 17 16:00 BST (UK) »
Hi, Ive been researching my family tree for a little while now and am a bit stumped with how to find the answer to a bit of a mystery.
My family all lived in Anglesey, for many generations, all in the same county, as was usual back then.
The for some unknown reason, one of my great great grandfathers sons, who it appears worked for his father in the family joinery business, just upsticks and moved. He moved to England, to Widnes, Lancashire. Along with his two very young sons and his heavily pregnant wife (who very sadly died in childbirth, we think!). He couldn't even speak English.
Where do I start figuring that one out??
Thanks in advance for any advice you could offer.

Hi, Welcome to Rootschat :)

There could be many reasons why he moved, branching out with his own family, seeking work, different work maybe.

Perhaps his wife had relations/connections there..some things we will never know.

How do you know he was not able to get by in English, many had a good grasp if not fluent in English. Although preferred their first language as would be the case for any.

Regards

Cas

Welcome to Rootschat.

Have you traced him in later censuses, what job did he have then, that may give a clue?

If you want to give a bit more information eg names, dates of birth, people may be able to find him and offer more suggestions.

Actually people were far more mobile than we give them credit for. I have an ancestor who is found living in a different county in virtually every census. Not content with that, at the age of 60 he emigrated to the USA.

I agree Jen, people were quite mobile. I have relatives moving from Norfolk to London, then to Liverpool and then back to London. People went where there was work.

Thanks everyone.
He was my great grandad and my mum remembers her dad saying that his dad couldn't speak English when he moved to Widnes.
I just thought it was a really bad time to move.
I can't imagine his wife was best pleased!
I'll add more info tomorrow, left my folder at work 😞 X
