Ellis/Covey marriage
« on: Wednesday 05 April 17 13:04 BST (UK) »
Hi all

I'm looking to find the ages, addresses, parents and witnesses to the marriage of Alfred Ellis (b.1885-6) and Dorothy May Covey (b.1894 Sussex).
They were married around 19th October 1914 at Guildford register office.

Hoping by knowing Albert's father I'll be able to narrow down a birth for him.

Thank you in advance :)

Hannah

The only way to get information from a registry office marriage is to purchase the certificate
Census information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

I agree this is the only way to be 100% sure what is on the certificate

However, Alfred ELLIS enlisted in The Queen Regt in April 1915 aged 29 years and 6 months
Implication that his birth date is circa Nov 1888
His occupation was Engine Driver

The records are damaged but he is shown as married to  Dorothy May Covey Oct 19 1914
She is shown as a spinster which is crossed out to widow

He is shown as having two sons
Raymond John LEE b 05.06.13 illeg with a letter to confirm that this is his son
Alfred Leslie ELLIS b 24.11.15 which ties with later records

He was presumed missing and then dead in Sept 1915
Although later records show ELLIS births with a COVEY mother up to 1934

As some records are recent I will send a PM also
Kearney & Bourke/ Johns & Fox/ Mannion & Finan/ Donohoe & Curley
Byrne [Carthy], Keeffe/ Germaine, Butler/ McDermott, Giblin/ Lally, Dolan
Toole, Doran; Dowling, Grogan/ Reilly, Burke; Warren, Kidd [Lawless]/ Smith, Scally; Mangan, Rodgers/ Fahy, Calday; Staunton, Miller
Further generations:
Brophy Coleman Eathorn(e) Fahy Fitzpatrick Geraghty Haverty Keane Keogh Nowlan Rowe Walder

Hi Hannah, I also have been looking up any info on Alfred Ellis and Dorothy May Covey. They were my Grandparents on my mothers side>Crystal. They are all buried at Slinfold Church, nr Horsham. The other children were Stan (half brother) Anthony, Joyce and Crystal. I have some letters from WW1
sent from Alf to Dorothy. Some Barns Green and some Five Oaks, Billingshurst. c/o Mrs. F Covey, presumably her mother. Who is the Albert you mention?

Regards

Sue

Hi Sue

I've just re-read my original post and realised that I actually meant Alfred not Albert.

I'm a descendent of his step-son Raymond John Lee (he assumed the surname name Ellis at some point). Do you live in the area?

Yes, as far as I have researched Mrs F. Covey would have been Dorothy's mother. Emma Lee married Felix Covey in 1905 in Horsham, Sussex - I haven't got the marriage certificate for this yet.

I always wondered if there were letters, as I believe Alfred died in 1915 during WW1. I believe his son (also Alfred) died in 1945 during WW2.

It's nice to 'meet' you!
