Andrew Hyslop born 1824/1825 Wee/Urr kirkcudbrightshire
« on: Wednesday 05 April 17 19:41 BST (UK) »
I am interested in finding out some more about this ancestor.

First, who were his parents?

He can be found on the 1851, 61 and 71 censuses with his wife Flora (Swan) and various family members in Dumfriesshire, his birth place is listed as Urr and Wee (is that a mistranscription)?

More importantly he is witness to his wife's death in 1872, but I can't find him after that so...

Second, what happened to him?

Bit of background, two of his daughters went to Canada and the States so it is possible he emigrated, but I can't find him abroad either.

Some family trees have him as remarrying a Mary Carson, but that would put him on two censuses in 1871, so I have ruled that out.

Any suggestions, please.

Hi,

Urr would be Haugh of Urr & I would assume 'Wee' to be a transcription error.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haugh_of_Urr

"two of his daughters went to Canada and the States"

What about the other children, did they move elsewhere to different areas as he may have gone to live in another town with family i.e. death would be recorded in the town he died?

Have you also tried the 'Fuzzy matching' option for a variation of spelling?

What was his occupation on his wife's death?

Did his occupation differ on any census' or was his occ. consistent?

Lots of questions, thanks.

Occupation was ploughman on wife's death, consistent with censuses.

Is the Andrew Hyslop in 1912 a death?

Born in Urr, not where censuses were taken.

Family, all accounted for apart from son James who I can't find either, he may have died I haven't checked this out.

Fuzzy matching H*slop, nothing else, I'll have a go.

Thanks,

Knowing he was born Urr is different from where he was last seen on a census & on registering his wife's death.

Where were they living when wife died?
Do you know where she's buried to find out if he's with her?

Yes, the Andrew Hyslop 1912 is a death but that's in Urr as I don't know where he was last sighted & haven't checked elsewhere as I thought Urr was where they were on the census'

Death of wife is Applegarth Dumfriesshire, last census is Lauder Hook Cottage, Dryfesdale.

I don't know where Flora is buried.

Thanks,

The 1912 death looks most likely going by age & area as he may have moved back to his birth place after being widowed.

I put in yr of birth 1823 +/- 5 with death between 1872 & 1924 for all of Scotland & that's the closest match I could find.

I have a relative who lived in Lambeth, Surrey, Middlesex in England who after being widowed went back to his birth place South Uist, Inverness, Scotland where he lived out his life & died.

I haven't checked any census records.
