Update on a Hannah Nash
« on: Friday 07 April 17 20:35 BST (UK) »
Hi all

I posted a little while ago on a Hannah Nash (www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=760398.0
) and have been doing some more digging.

Known Information

The Hannah Nash I'm looking for was stated to have been born in Hatfield, Hertfordshire around 1798 - 1800 according to the 1851 and 1861 census records:

Code: [Select]
Registration district Pancras
Sub-registration district Kentish Town
ED, institution, or vessel 12
Household schedule number 216
Piece 1498
Folio 583
Page number 52

Code: [Select]
Registration district Uxbridge
Sub-registration district Uxbridge
ED, institution, or vessel 1
Household schedule number 110
Piece 768
Folio 14
Page number 21

The census records show she was married to a John Goodman. I can only find one marriage of a John Goodman to a Hannash Nash which was on 14 June 1819 (which makes sense given Hannah's date of birth).

The marriage entry on Ancestry shows:

Code: [Select]
FHL Film Number: 919221
Marriage Place: Saint Mary,Aylesbury,Buckingham,England

I have ordered the actual record from Hertfordshire CC and have uploaded it here: http://imgur.com/a/3Zy0u. This shows the same date as the above but a different location of Kings Langley, Hertfordshire - I am not sure why this?

You can see the witnesses to the marriage were a Matthew Goodman and a Harriet Nash.

Which Hannah Nash is mine?

Hertfordshire CC tells me that, from examining Microfilm of the baptism register for Hatfield, St Etheldreda (m/f 521), there was no Hannah Nash born in Hatfield between 1796 and 1800.

A search on Ancestry in Hertfordshire and surrounding counties reveals two possibilities:

  • 2 Feb 1797, Hannah, daughter of William and Frances Nash, Tring, Herts
  •   16 Dec 1799 (born 26 Nov 1799), Hannah, daughter of Samuel and Hanah,  Water Lane Independent, Bishops Stortford, Herts

Neither sets of parents were the witnesses to the marriage on 14 June 1819 (I assume they must therefore have been siblings - I would confirm this by looking at the census records but obviously these do not exist for this period of time).

Is there anyway forward in knowing which (or neither) of the above Hannah Nashs is the one who married John Goodman? I think the one born in Tring is most likely as it is very near Aylesbury (which is where the Ancestry record shows the marriage to John Goodman but differs from the actual record which lists the location as Kings Langley).

Many thanks

Tom

The marriage is at Saint Mary, Aylesbury but Hannah is stated to have been living in the parish of King's Langley at the time of the marriage.
