Waddington Umbrellas
« on: Saturday 08 April 17 13:29 BST (UK) »
Hello,
This is my first post to the Roots Chat Forum so apologies if I'm not doing it properly.
Anyway I am trying to find further information about my Great Great Grandfather William Eden Waddington and his wife Jane Waddington nee Melton and also about his father James Waddington and mother Mary Ann Waddington nee Eden. They had a business Waddington and Sons Umbrellas 1 Coleman Street London Wall.
Thanks for your help.
Simone

Welcome to rootschat Simone.

I'm afraid you have posted this in the wrong section, but don't worry - I will ask a moderator to move it for you. :)

Regarding your request ....
Can you give some dates for your Waddingtons please?
(eg dates and places of birth)
You ask for "information" - is there anything specific you are looking for?
Do you already have the family in any census for example? (that is usually a good place to start?  :)

Welcome to Rootschat  :)
"and sons implies that the founder had several sons. A quick internet search shows they made far more than just umbrellas but it's not yet clear exactly how much information you already have. Here's one link from National Archives-

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Can you tell us what you already know please Simone? (so we don't go looking for information you might already have)  :)

As a starting point I have located the family in the 1861 census:

RG9/144/152/36
23 Annette Crescent, Islington
James Waddinton head marr 77 Unbrella Manufacturer born Middx Shoreditch
Mary A wife 71 b Goodman Fields
Mary A daur 46 b Surrey Croydon
Harriet E 35 b Oxfordshire Henley on Thames
Charlotte 31 B Middx Shoreditch
Matilda P 27 b London
1 servant
All daughters unmarried, all family members "Umbrella Manufacturers."

William must be elsewhere.

Same address and family members in the 1851 census with the addition of son Frederick born 1832 London. Surprise surprise, he is an Umbrella Manufacturer.  ;)

In 1841 the family are in Coleman Street.

William is with them this time. He is aged 24, not born in county. Two more sons, Alfred aged 21, and Richard, 20.
