Knight commander of St Michael and St George
« on: Saturday 08 April 17 23:48 BST (UK) »
Hello just found my great great Grandmother on the 1861 census listed as a servant for a Knight. Not very exciting I know  :D but I'm just wondering if anybody could possibly explain to me in proper Laymans terms what actually is a Knight commander of St Michael and St George. Please

Thank you.

The Order of St Michael and St George is used to honour those who serve Britain in the international sphere - so, for the most part, civil servants in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the like.

There are three levels of award:

CMG
KCMG
GCMG

Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George; Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George; Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George. Only KCMGs and GCMGs are knights, and thus entitled to the honorific "Sir".

Alternatively:

CMG = Call Me God
KCMG = Kindly Call Me God
GCMG = God Calls Me God

(as explained by Bernard Woolley, in Yes Minister)
All identified names up to and including my great x5 grandparents: Abbot Andrews Baker Blenc(h)ow Brothers Burrows Chambers Clifton Cornwell Escott Fisher Foster Frost Giddins Groom Hardwick Harris Hart Hayho(e) Herman Holcomb(e) Holmes Hurley King-Spooner Martindale Mason Mitchell Murphy Neves Oakey Packman Palmer Peabody Pearce Pettit(t) Piper Pottenger Pound Purkis Rackliff(e) Richardson Scotford Sherman Sinden Snear Southam Spooner Stephenson Varing Weatherley Webb Whitney Wiles Wright
