James Tucker - b.c. 1790 - Leighton
« on: Thursday 13 April 17 22:45 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

James Tucker was my 3xGt Grandfather.  He was born c.1790 in Leighton, Somerset, according to census records.  I have him in the following censuses:

1861

Ford Toll Gate House, North Wraxall, Wiltshire

James Tucker, Head, 71, Toll Collector, Leighton [Salop?]
Sarah Tucker, Wife, 44, Dressmaker, Somerset Frome
Susanah Jane Tucker, Daughter, 11, Scholar, Stapleford
John Charles Tucker, Son, 5, Scholar, Wilts Melksham

RG9; Piece: 1280; Folio: 64; Page: 18

1851

Southington Street, Stapleford, Wiltshire

James Tucker, Head, 60, Toll Bar Keeper, Somerset Leighton
Sarah Tucker, Wife, 33, Somerset Frome
Susanna J Tucker, Daughter, 1, Wiltshire Stapleford

HO107; Piece: 1848; Folio: 137; Page: 30

James Tucker married Sarah Palmer on 7th November 1848 at Fugglestone St Peter, Wiltshire. Fathers' names John Tucker and Charles Palmer.

I need to find James Tucker on the 1841 census and any records from his life before he married Sarah.  Was he married before?  Did he have another family?  Who was his mother? (His son, John Charles is named after both fathers, so was daughter Susanna Jane the same?)  I have no knowledge of the geography of the south west of the country, which really doesn't help me! :)

Any help would be gratefully received, thank you!

Regards, Emma ;)

Does the marriage certificate state he was a bachelor/widower

Thank you so much for your replies!

James has always been a bit of an unknown as he falls at an awkward time historically. Why didn't they have detailed census records earlier?!  ::) More to the point, why did his parents not give him an obscure middle name?!

Thank you for your help so far. :)

If the baptism for James is correct these are proberly his siblings, all baptised at St Mary, Cloford, Somerset.

Betty Tucker 1 Oct 1780
Hannah Tucker 8 Feb 1784
Fanny Tucker 6 Jun 1790
Joseph Tucker 10 Jan 1796

I still have'nt found the marriage for John and Rose but I suspect it would be at the same church as the baptisms.

I can't find the marriage for John and Rose any where, perhaps if you post a request on the Somerset forum someone may have more access to the parish registers. There seems to be a gap in the marriage records for Cloford between 1754 and 1784 which is the period we need.
