1999 Death
« on: Sunday 16 April 17 12:50 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I have been trying to find information about a death that occurred in 1999. The person was my father's great aunt and she died in Sydney in 1999. She had a history of mental illness, never married and the only child she had was adopted out at the beginning of WW2 (cue the mental illness, according to family reports). She was admitted to Callum Park, again, don't know if it was a recurrent admission or a 'one off'. I have been able to find her on electoral rolls up until the 1970's.

Does anyone know if I might have any success applying to BDM for her death certificate? I don't know who her official next of kin would have been, but her siblings are all deceased now too.

Myself and a distant cousin think it's really sad that no-one knows anything about her, or where she's buried. We'd like to find her resting place and pay our respects. We realise we'll probably never find her son.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Tracey.

Non-historical death certificates are restricted in NSW for 30 years after the event.  Her death certificate would not be available until 2029.

If you would like to post the her name someone may find her burial or cremation record.

Cheers

Yes, unless you know you are named/identified on a NSW BDM certificate, it is unlikely that you can access it while it is in the restricted access period.    As you have found the lady on the electoral rolls in various suburbs of Sydney, and you believe she died in around 1999, have you considered checking the online cemetery indexes for where she is interred?   Here's several:

I am not certain that your person was permanently institutionalised, as none of the addresses on the electoral rolls are actually for Callan Park or Broughton Hall.     But I do know that Mental Health Records can be extremely difficult for members of the general public to access.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

Cando, that's my previous thread. I'll check out the links that JM has posted re cemeteries. I don't think she could have been permanently institutionalised either.

Would it be improper of me to give her name here? I know she has no living siblings and her son has not been in contact with anyone who is left.

Thanks again,
Tracey.

This may help if the son is also looking for birth family connections

From the other thread that Cando kindly linked we can read her name.    May I mention that I have not found her name listed at Ryerson Index, nor have I found her at the usual cemetery indexes, so may I gently ask if you and your distant cousin are sure she is deceased,  or are you perhaps presuming she is no longer alive?   If alive, she would be in her 90s, and that is not impossible.  There's thousands of Australians alive and alert and aged over 100... so there's likely to be many more aged in their 90s.

Perhaps you could consider checking if you can access information from the more recent electoral rolls, likely available through the State Libraries.

Thank you all again for giving up your time to help me with this problem. You've certainly given me lots of positive assistance, and yes JM, I think maybe we are assuming that Irene is deceased. I've messaged my cousin to ask how she found out Irene was deceased, I don't think we have concrete proof!
I've got to go now, the sun is shining here and is too precious to waste! I'll get back to solving the mystery tonight!
Thanks again.
Tracey.
