Strong Family
« on: Sunday 16 April 17 17:46 BST (UK) »
Hi all.
I'm trying to trace my Strong ancestors... Some came to New South Wales in the mid 19th century but before that they lived in Co Cavan... Does anyone here have any Strong connections?
Best wishes,
Michele

Welcome to RootsChat! ;D

Probably best to check the Surnames Interest Table?
There is a link below, at the bottom of the page.
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Civil registration of births, deaths and Catholic marriages didn't start until 1864 (from 1845 for non-Catholic marriages) and the first complete census for all Ireland is 1901 so it's important to have a location (parish is not actual townland not just 'Cavan') and religion to check for church records, etc.
You'll need to start by getting all possible details from Australian records if you haven't already done so.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

I have the name Archibald Strong who came out to NSW on the Petrel with his 3 sisters fromPlymouth in 1849.. I've been told the family came from Co Cavan.. Their father may have been called John.. However I can't find any proof of this..

The passenger list of the Petrel is on Ancestry (free this weekend).
Archibald is stated to be aged 27, a farm labourer.
Also Margaret (24), Anne (22) and Sarah (20).
The girls are said to be from Ballyborough (?) Co. Cavan, and Archibald from Killincare (again, I think that's what it says), Co. Cavan.
His parents are Robert and Hannah, both deceased, and they are all C. of E.
Margaret's mother is recorded as Anne rather than Hannah.

Herbertson, Congalton, Paterson - Scotland
Reed, Elmer - Hunts.
Branson - Bucks. and Birmingham
Warren, Ball, Jones - Birmingham
Fuller, Bourne, Sheepwash - Kent

Hi Michele, my best friends ancestors Strongs are from Cavan going back several generations.  When you have a few more posts on here you can use the private message system to exchange email address etc. Do you have any names dates for the Strongs you are researching in NSW this would be essential to pursue your search here in Ireland. Rgds

That's great, Bev.. It's a bit confusing about the different mother and birthplace.. I can't find any Irish records for any of them, originally do on how they all came to be going to NSW.. They surely couldn't have afforded to pay for if their father was a farm labourer?
