Any info marriage/death Margaret MITCHELL Melbourne
« on: Friday 21 April 17 10:32 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace any info about my great aunt Margaret (Maggie) Mitchell. She was born in Sunderland UK in 1885 the daughter of Andrew Mitchell and Hannah nee Kennedy. Margaret was a dressmaker and family stories say she left England with her sewing machine! I know she was still in UK in 1921 as she was witness at her sisters wedding. I have found a record of a Margaret Mitchell arriving in Melbourne from London February 1927 on the ship Otranto. Address in Australia is Federal Mills Geelong. This would fit with her occupation. I can find no further trace so any help or ideas would be gratefully received.

Trees online say that Margaret was one of 10 children, and you can see this is correct by checking the census records. Her mother Hannah's parents were Robert Mitchell and Mary Dodds.  The last address I can find  for Margaret is North Farm Fulwell.
regards.

Thanks for the above replies. I do have all the info on both the Mitchell and Kennedy families in the U.K. Margaret was not married when she left for Australia. It is what happened to her in Australia I am stuck with.

Here's the Victoria BDM https://online.justice.vic.gov.au/ which is free to search.

I have tried searching for a death of
Margaret
with father Andrew Mitchell or just Mitchell
and/or mother Hannah
and permutations of above without success.

adding : click on Show More Search Options to search by parents' names

There is a death of a Margaret Elizabeth DUNNING in 1932 with father Andrew MITCHELL but mother is Martha FERGUSON and aged 73 - not even close :(

But perhaps I missed something ... you can check for yourself.

You could find the marriages for Margaret Mitchell and then check trove
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ for wedding announcements.

Ros

adding : the deaths of a Margaret MITCHELL with parents unknown were of the wrong age ... (just click on the entry to see age and place of birth).  Best to check my search  :)

Some lovely photos of people working at the Federal Woollen Mills in Geelong in 1945 - unfortunately no names for the people.

Hi Ros
Thank you so much for the above info. This will give me plenty more to check. Just finding the newspaper articles is great as I have obtained a lot of info from English papers. It is possible Margaret returned to England but none of the surviving members of the family seem to know what became of her. As she was 41 when she arrived in Australia it is possible she lied about her age? Do you know if there are records held anywhere for staff at the mills or of Australian wills?
Thanks again. This will keep me busy for a few days.

Linda

Hi Linda,
Victorian wills can be found here http://www.rootschat.com/links/01jz6/
and are free to download (but take a while). Whoops only wills up to 1925 are digitised and free

Another rootschatter, muss, mentioned that she couldn't find most of the other "Yorkshire girls" from the article marrying in Victoria so I did a quick search of the more unusual names too and only found a couple, one who married in 1927.   We wondered if most of the girls returned (or were returned) to England a few years later.

   Ros
adding : can't find the deaths for most of the uncommon names in Victoria either.
