Ricklin Hill
« on: Friday 21 April 17 18:47 BST (UK) »
One of my ancestors, Robert Wild, is shown in the 1851 census as being born at Durham, Ricklin Hill. I can find no mention of this place anywhere. From other information, I assume that it is in the Bishop Auckland area.

Has anyone ever heard of Ricklin Hill.

Many thanks. Alan

Is his birthplace listed as anything different on any other census or is it always Ricklin Hill?

Given that the 1851 census would suggest a birth year of about 1768 I wonder if this baptism from Auckland St Andrew might be worth following up (from Free Reg)

26 Nov 1767 Robt Wyld - father John Wyld - abode Pictsly Hills ( A brother John would appear to have been baptised on the same day).

Thanks. This seems to be the right person.  Neither of these places have any similarity to what is written on the census. It is either a transcription error at the time or Ricklin Hill was a very small and insignificant place.

At least I have his birth now. Thank you.

Wonderful. Must go up there and have a look. He was a yeoman farmer.  Must be more records somewhere.

There is a will for John Wild, yeoman, of Pixley Hills dated 1771 & probated in 1787.  Mentions wife Elizabeth and children John & Ann, plus Ann's daughter Dinah Wild.  As Dinah was baptised 1762 (as Wyld) it would seem likely that she is Robert's cousin.
