Thomas Moore (Home Child) in Birmingham and Coventry
« on: Saturday 22 April 17 15:07 BST (UK) »
I am searching for any information on the parents and siblings of Thomas Moore who gives his birth as August 1864 in Birmingham / Coventry ( two papers and two different birth locations). He came to Canada in 1874 with the Middlemore Homes. We have the Middlemore records and no parents are given. He puts his parents as Bridget and Johannes on his marriage certificate (not sure about the accuracy as his wife's information has mistakes). Family story is his family came to England from Ireland during the famine. He says he has 7 or 10 sisters. One sister is "Mrs Tucker" from Coventry, no information about the others.
I can't seem to find anything that fits on the GRO or ancestry.
Any help or suggestions would be great.
Thanks

There is a Moore family in Birmingham in 1871 with the mother Bridget giving her birthplace as Ireland. The father is Edward Moore who also comes from Ireland.

They married in Birmingham District in March 1858. Edward Moore and Bridget Loftus. Source: FreeBMD. Vol-6d, Page-172.

The family is living at 5, 30 Court, Park Street, Birmingham in 1871. Source: 1871 England Census, Class: RG10; Piece: 3108; Folio: 12.

There is not a Thomas Moore b1864 in the household, but, there is an Edward b1864.

The births of the children can be seen on the GRO Online Indexes.

There are Tucker - Moore births in Birmingham to George + Sarah, I think
including
Samuel 1876
George 1877
John 1879
(1881, Birmingham, piece 2979 folio 65 page 29)

But did she marry George Tucker as Sarah Moraghan, 26 July 1874, Birmingham, father Thomas Moraghan?
There is a Thomas + Bridget Moraghan in Birmingham in 1871, with a Thomas, age 6, born Birmingham
piece 3112 folio 27 page 19
Living with a married daughter by the look of it, and there also are four more daughters of theirs, including Sarah.
Youngest child of that married daughter is also Thomas (perhaps Gilmour, Thomas, mother Moroughan, Sep 1870, Birmingham)

Thomas Moraghan, bap Birmingham St Peter, 28 August 1864, born 2 August
parents Thomae + Bridgittae Coyne

John

Hi
Thanks for all the information

I wonder what the date was of the document naming his sister as "Mrs Tucker"?
Thomas Moore gave the information to his family - he died in 1950 - so this would be passed down as "family lore" - he said he had 7 or 10 sisters and they came to Ireland during the famine. On census records he gives his parents place of birth as Ireland.

It is possible that Moore could be a short form of "Moraghan" or "MOORANEAN" - maybe it was made to look less Irish when he was put in the Middlemore Home.

It sure has been a challenge. It's obvious he didn't talk much about his background but I think that is the case with many Home Children.

Thank you for all of your help. I will follow these leads and see if any of these named Thomas or Edward are not around in 1881 when Thomas was already in Canada.

This looked like a great lead with both parents from Ireland. I searched this family  and they are all still together in 1881 and 1891 - thanks - moving on to the next lead :)
